Homegrown brand Tribe of 6 uses responsibly sourced and recycled materials

Homegrown brands are just the best. Not only do they help keep our carbon footprints smaller by reducing the logistical means of acquiring them, but also, you’re likely to be supporting a small startup with real people at the helm.

With athleisure here to stay it seems, choosing brands that use responsibly sourced materials and adopt sustainable production methods, is the least we can do. Tribe of 6 is a homegrown Dubai brand that uses materials such as Organic Loopback Cotton (certified by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)) and Jacquard Textured Fabric (made from recycled polyester).

They also integrate a variety of other recycled fabrics from Sedex approved factories and Global Recycled Standards (GRS) certified., such as; Recycled Polyester, which has a sueded and peached effect, providing a soft luxurious feel. Recycled Crinkle Nylon which provides a smooth, comfy finish that is also lightweight and Recycled Polyester Modal Stretch, which offers a premium feel and breathability.

Furthering the sustainability goals of the U.A.E., Tribe of 6 adopts a “limited stock” production strategy rather than mass production, which not only maintains the exclusivity and quality of their products but also minimises overproduction and waste. Some unsold garments are recycled and repurposed to create new products, ensuring that nothing goes to waste and further reducing its environmental impact.

Boho Summer’s with Dunesi

This summer’s gunna hurt like a mother f**cker, but you can still make sure you look the part. Dunesi is Dubai’s homegrown boutique resort wear brand that is well loved by Dubai’s instagram favourites. The summer collection includes a range of boho chic dresses, printed tunics, two pieces and statement accessories, all perfect for wherever you jet off during Eid.

Also a big supporter of ethical manufacturing, every item in the collection is produced right here in the UAE and only in limited numbers to reduce wastage.

We caught up with Founder and Managing Director, Hanne Ripsaluoma; who is currently dividing her time between Dubai, Finland, Spain and Chile, as travelling and exploring is one of her passions. “I always get inspired in new places, whether it’s a city, beach or a restaurant that I have never been to before” she explains.

What is the key direction for your SS18 collection

We wanted to continue with the floaty, boho styles that are perfect also for the summer whether you are in Dubai, Ibiza, Bali or the Hamptons. The latest dresses are made of cotton and chiffon, which are comfortable in the summer temperatures. They are casual yet chic, with our usual breezy twist.

What/where/who are your designs influenced by?

As a brand, it was heavily influenced by the love I have for Dubai and its beaches and the surrounding desert, those continue to be the main inspiration for the designs too. We also want to create clothes that give you that lovely “holiday feeling”, bringing back memories from vacations. We always use bright coloured prints in our range because that’s what we are drawn to in the lovely, constant sunshine that we live in.

Who’s the Dunesi woman

She’s a little boho herself, loves the outdoors, spends time with her family and friends on the beach and eating “al fresco”. She comes from anywhere in the world, cares about our planet, is full of life and wanderlust and is always making memories.

What does Dunesi mean?

I come from Finland and in Finnish “unesi” means “your dream”, we then added D for Dubai and made up Dunesi which fittingly has ‘dunes” in it too… your Dubai dream.

Have you any plans to make the brand more eco-friendly / sustainable?

Being sustainable is a big part of our philosophy. Dunesi is a member of 1% for the Planet organization (one of only two in the UAE!), donating 1% of revenue towards protecting our planet. We don’t use any plastic in our packaging, our delivery packages are made of recycled paper as is also our jewellery range (in collaboration with Agulu Paperbeads). We are also currently looking for and testing some natural materials to use in the next collection.

Dima Ayad X Hautletic Reinventing Athleisure

It’s a fairly new debate but one without a real answer – can you wear workout gear to work? Some of the athleisure pieces i own are without a doubt much more expensive than the skirts and tops hanging in the wardrobe, as well as remaining ‘un-used’ gym wise. Hautletic is the hub for most of these luxe pieces and there’s a new homegrown collab that’s stealing the show. Lebanese ready-to-wear designer Dima Ayad and Hautletic’s Priya Bhatia have launched a completely limited-edition range that’s definitely too good for the workout drawer.

A nine-piece collection in the Dima Ayad x Hautletic range celebrates female ingenuity; ‘blending Hautletic’s signature athleisure style with Dima Ayad’s precise understanding of the modern woman’s lifestyle’. It’s the kind of sports gear you could wear into a bar and not feel at all underdressed.

Enter a world of minimals, with abundant greys and blacks mixed with Ayad’s signature seasonal metallics. The floaty shapes are far from unflattering as they cinch in the waist and elongate the legs, whilst giving you a bit of wiggle room too. Picture the perfect ‘tracksuit,’ whilst being being as far from cliche as possible.

“I thought about the journey of the modern woman – from the day to the night. I want her to feel great from the morning to the evening without trying,” Dima Ayad, Designer

“It’s also about the value and versatility of the pieces you invest in. Quality and fit are paramount, even for seemingly ‘easy-wear’ athleisure.” Priya Bhatia, Hautletic

Get your hands on this urban wardrobe only at Hautletic in Galleria Mall, Dubai.

Loving AA Sisters Swimwear

Because it’s always bikini season here in Dubai, we like to keep our water wear interesting. I’m a big believer too in homegrown brands, passion projects created by the love of life. So AA Sisters Swimwear is a brand i’m wearing loving now. Created by two sisters Ayşıl Aybaba Dilmen and Aynil Aybaba, based in Turkey, their unique pieces have made it across to our shores to help brighten up our beaches.
AA Sisters Swimwear
Made with the weekend warrior in mind, AA Sisters Swimwear is a combination of functional, fun and flirty, featuring both traditional and unique one-piece and bikini designs, as well as knitted swimwear for the more adventurous beachgoer. Lusting After: Qatar’s HZ by Hissa Zainal

There’s nothing that screams summer more to me than floaty dresses and leather sandals. So when I was introduced to Qatar based designer Hissa Zainal’s new collection, I was immediately taken back to a sunny day in Europe last summer, watching the world go by from a small cafe in France.

HZ by Hissa Zainal is a ready to wear label and the brainchild of Hissa Zainal, a young and creative Qatari who’s also an award wining fashion designer. Since the release of her debut collection, Prologue, Hissa’s work has been featured in fashion magazines across the region and we can see why!

HZ by Hissa Zainal is a resort collection for SS17 inspired by the warmth of the sun, the salty ocean breeze and fragrant vivid blooms, combining fresh tones with relaxed silhouettes, creating a fun and feminine aesthetic.

Fabrics are light and feature a mixture of cotton and denim, which is perfect for those long hazy evenings. The collection is made of embroidered sheer overlays, featuring statement cutouts and ruffled sleeves add a very dreamy feel. Embroidered flowers, hand illustrated by Hissa Zainal add a beautifully detailed touch to the dresses too.

See what I mean…

BaemBu: The Dubai Based Eco-Brand

It’s said that the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is today. The Earth is in need of our help and there’s no better time to really be living authentic and organic!

Fashion is an industry that’s producing TONNES of waste, besides that you should also be conscious about where your clothes come from, who made them and what material they are being made with! (After all, you don’t really want your clothes to live longer than you do).
BaemBu

The key to being a conscious consumer is to look for that guarantee. One of my close friends started her ethical journey a couple of years ago now and is helping to persuade the region into adopting a more sustainable style. Did you know that 80% of the environmental impact of clothing occurs post-purchase, so it’s a great reminder to cool wash our clothes and hang dry!

BaemBu is her collection of unique blended T shirts and hoodies, comprising of 70% bamboo viscose & 30% organic cotton. Completely organically grown, sourced and made under fair trade regulations, Aimee Changco and her partner Matthew King ensure that even the printing on them uses organic water based ink. BaemBu

Having received accreditations that include ‘Fair Wear Foundation’, ‘Soil Association’ and ‘Confidence In Textiles’, we can be sure that BaemBu is nothing but eco-friendly. They have some amazing natural properties too, such as being; hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial, UV protection, moisture wicking as well as insulating, so you can literally take them everywhere!
BaemBu

You can get your BaemBu T’s here or spot Aimee and Matt around the UAE from Cocktail Kitchen to Market OTB, The Change Initiative and in a variety of cool pop-ups across the city. Not only do they help promote a more sustainably sourced future for Dubai’s fashion landscape, they also run the ‘Shoebox Love’ campaign during Ramadan so make sure you follow them for more ethical initiatives coming up!

Summer’s Sorted with Omasi

Im a real water baby at heart but I love everything the summer has to offer! You can consistently find me soaking up the sun on weekends in Dubai, either relaxing poolside or paddling at sunset beach. What you won’t find me doing though is sitting on the sand. I have a very real (but unexplainable) freak out if I get sandy. I’m not talking toes as such, but if I pick up a towel, I have to inspect every inch of it first! Either way, I’d be lost if I moved somewhere without access to the sea.
Omasi

Which is why I’m a massive fan of beachwear too… (the name kinda gave that away right), so I wanted to introduce you to OMASI – for those who haven’t already heard of them, Omasi was created by two lovely long-term Dubai residents who also had a passion for this city and its beach life. Finnish born, Hanne and Terhi started Omasi 2 1/2 years ago and having spent lots of summer’s in the sunshine, they were constantly picking up beach products the world over. With this in mind, they saw a real niche here for locally designed and produced products that you can get online.
Omasi

Their products are comfy, very wearable (I take my poncho everywhere) and are even brand-able. What’s even greater, is that they are the perfect presents – they can be customised with either initials or your full name! Currently found in a wealth of hotel shops like Atlantis, Sofitel and Kempinski, as well as specialist stores like the SurfHouse, Adventure HQ, expect to find their label on most of your holiday hit-lists.

Pick up your own personalised poncho here!
