BaemBu: The Dubai Based Eco-Brand

It’s said that the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is today. The Earth is in need of our help and there’s no better time to really be living authentic and organic!

Fashion is an industry that’s producing TONNES of waste, besides that you should also be conscious about where your clothes come from, who made them and what material they are being made with! (After all, you don’t really want your clothes to live longer than you do).

The key to being a conscious consumer is to look for that guarantee. One of my close friends started her ethical journey a couple of years ago now and is helping to persuade the region into adopting a more sustainable style. Did you know that 80% of the environmental impact of clothing occurs post-purchase, so it’s a great reminder to cool wash our clothes and hang dry!

BaemBu is her collection of unique blended T shirts and hoodies, comprising of 70% bamboo viscose & 30% organic cotton. Completely organically grown, sourced and made under fair trade regulations, Aimee Changco and her partner Matthew King ensure that even the printing on them uses organic water based ink.

Core Pilates Review

It was my first time trying Real Pilates and it’s a full class…

The instructor joins and starts us off with some fairly easy, low level warm up stretches. So far so good. I’m quite competitive so I’m automatically looking for someone in the room to vibe off, someone who’s going to make me push myself harder. The instructor was great, not what I expected I have to admit (I’m used to young lululemon branded ladies whose abs are my fitspo goals), but don’t worry about not feeling ‘worked out’ he was incredibly welcoming and very attentive to posture (which is what I need).

The core pilates session was a complete mix of nationality and age (all women in my class), so I didn’t really expect to be the first to struggle… he made everything look so easy!
Although the work out is slow in pace and simple in understanding, the difference in posture, alignment and pulse made me sweat. From the spiderman – esque plank formation (which I collapsed in even though my normal planks are strong), to the squat workout that still stings now… it was a great class.

I’ve realised (with the full range of aching muscles) that there’s no benefit to doing just one workout over and over, you need to change it up constantly to work all the muscles… Here’s to the next challenge 🙂

⌚️ Dare to BARE: Tag Heuer Black Workout ⌚️

I wouldn’t consider myself weak. I mean I work out 3-4 times a week, wake surf every weekend and cycle around the autodrome occasionally too. So when Tag Heuer contacted us to see if we wanted to take their ‘Black Workout,’ I was excited to say the least.

Never before have I been so out of my depth.

#DontCrackUnderPressure is their mantra and Oh My GOD they put you to the test. My physical pain-preferences are Flybarre, yoga and anything aquatic that help keep me in shape. And let me tell you, Flybarre isn’t ballet, nor is it a walk in the park… you will exhaust each muscle group slowly, painfully and until you can’t pulse any longer. But this was a whole new world!

My body definitely isn’t used to cardio based workouts, I’m slowly getting dragged into that world but I’m looking for an easy way in and there just isn’t one…

Right, so the Black workout at BARE gym, a self-professed ‘non-gym’ in Business Bay – looks innocent enough. It’s got cool black floors, a TRX jungle gym outside and a fairly empty room with a stage in the front, and a Tag Heuer clock handsomely projected to the right of it on the wall. We were warned that their social workout has a warm up that involves actually leaving the gym (it’s midday by this time FYI), so after a quick lap (!) we came back in to get set up for their 1000 calorie cross-training workout.

From caterpillars, to upside down bugs, creepy crawlies (not sure why it’s all creature related) and of course the dreaded burpee, the next 40 minutes near enough wiped me out.

“Blissful endorphin high” it is not. It’s hot, sweaty and will push you past your limit… which is a stretch. But if it’s an ass-kicking you want… this is it.

🌱 World Environment Day in Dubai 🌱

Friday the 3rd of June is World Environment Day and this year Dubai will be going blue! 🌊

By blue, I mean we’ll will be putting particular effort towards cleaning up the seafront and making the coastline a cleaner home for our various aquatic creatures. I’m SO glad to discover the Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG), who along with Dubai Municipality, Nakheel & the Burj Al Arab Rehab Centre, have organised a lovely little morning at the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary (located in the Ghantoot Reserve). It’s all in aid of raising awareness about our impact on the marine and coastal environment… something that is never too late to change.

EMEG’s a non-profit organization based in UAE. Established in 1996 under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the leadership of Ali Saqar Sultan Al Suweidi.

I’m particularly looking forward to helping release their rescued sea turtles! They’ve got over 40 nests this year and had a batch of 86 baby turtles hatching last week. We’ll also get involved with their beach clean-up & mangrove planting.

It’s a great initiative and I’m already looking at a few friends of mine who could do with some CSR partners 🙂

☠ Rude Fashion – Bringing Back The Graphic T ☠

Back in the spring of 2011, the Rude project started taking shape somewhere between Milan, London, Los Angeles and Miami. It was the brainchild of celebrity PR manager Marco Bacini and Gianluca Gigli, who both had the same passion for fashion and communication.

Travelling between these cities in particular helped develop the brand’s direction and looking at their trends help mould a unique new a philosophy for the Rude Project: the Rock’n’Dandy concept.

Born in Milan and totally ‘Made in Italy’, Rude is unique in that it reads the same in both English and Italian. Rude is an irreverent skull, “raw” – T-shirt’s that are fun don’t take themselves too seriously, designs which send a strong message of character and sensuality.

Making waves across the city, Rude immediately became a “cult” must-have for all celebrities. The Rude project is a constant work in progress, which continues with the same explosive energy now as it did at the beginning, with Marky Ramone being one of the brands biggest ambassadors!

“Rude Mania” has hit town… in just 9 months, it’s in more than 300 boutiques worldwide and has opened their first pop-up here at Dubai’s infamous BoxPark.

Bikini Ready with Blue Ink Beachwear

Another day and we’re another step closer to summer here in Dubai. As the saying goes, summer bodies are made in the spring, so it’s also true that the bikini’s we’re buying to wear in the summer, we’re shopping for now.

There’s a new designer on the net who’s highlighting the maillot in exciting ways. Designed by Anisha Lalani, Blue Ink Beachwear is a pretty mixture of prints and pastels that have us wanderlusting after the long sunsets in the Med. Designed in Belgium and made in Italy, Blue Ink is made using carefully selected luxury fabrics, that are both girly enough and sexy enough to excite us here at TBS.

With a focus on ‘strong is the new sexy’ Blue Ink furthers our mantra for a more confident summer outlook!

🌾Plants – The New Gift of Romance 🌾

Most girls love getting flowers… it’s romantic, they smell nice and the give a pop of colour to your interior décor. I’m not most girls… I would MUCH rather be given plants over flowers. Sounds weird I know, but their leafy green textures are much more appealing to me than flowers whose pollen stems are bound to leak all over my desk or ruin anything I’m wearing.

For those of you in Dubai who know where to shop for these, there’s a few hotspots I’d head to first and one that I would DEFINITELY recommend for outdoor landscaping. The Dubai Garden Centre is my go-to green house normally, not just because of their delicious little café – Roseleaf, but they have plenty of little indoor plants at only 10, 15 AED each that look très cute dotted around the house. There’s a new garden centre up at Al Barari that I am dying to check out, but I’m hoping to be surprised at the prices up there.

My favourite little nursery is just behind Wasl road’s Spinneys, on a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it lawn around the corner, full of gorgeous ceramic vases and plenty of tall leafy’s for the terrace. Cheap and very cheerful, we’ve recently spent an afternoon homing bougainvillea and grasses on the patio.

I’ve trolled through Pinterest (none of the below are my images) to find those gorgeous green elements for our home, which is fittingly known as ‘the beach house’.

Making Waves over the Weekend

I love a good cocktail at sunset on the beach… i mean who doesn’t! So we wasted no time heading down to the Layali shoreline at Al Qasr hotel on Saturday for a surf inspired sunset session with global brand BCBGMaxAzria.

Live music permeated the venue, with tones more ethereal than the songs she was covering… …must find out who the singer was! 🙂

The collection was a mixture of floaty fabrics, perfect for the So Cal summer they were taking inspiration from, festival florals combined with a few bulky booties. Expect Coachella to be full of this SS16 line up!

🕶 Throwing Shade with Glassing Sunglasses 🕶

I’m a big sunglass-aholic… literally drawers full, but as much as I love all shapes and sizes, there’s only ever one pair in my handbag at any one time and these Italian imports have made quite an impact.

Born in 2010 by two LOVELY designers Alessandro Forte and Stefano Ottone, they opened a vintage store in Ibiza and escalated their entrepreneurship to creating and producing ‘Glassing‘ – their own brand, after an adventurous summer on the white isle. It quickly emerged as one of Italy’s most cutting edge brands, focusing on using innovative materials, often combined in unusual ways.

With four flagship stores in Italy; in Milan, Portofino, Taormina and Capri, they have now brought their famous frames to Dubai and I have fully jumped on their beachside band wagon (they are currently retailing in a bright yellow pop-up container down at The Beach Dubai). Fans include Kate Moss, Justin Bieber, Beyonce and Jay-Z, P. Diddy, Cristiano Ronaldo and Anna Dello Russo to name but a few.
