Core Pilates Review

It was my first time trying Real Pilates and it’s a full class…

The instructor joins and starts us off with some fairly easy, low level warm up stretches. So far so good. I’m quite competitive so I’m automatically looking for someone in the room to vibe off, someone who’s going to make me push myself harder. The instructor was great, not what I expected I have to admit (I’m used to young lululemon branded ladies whose abs are my fitspo goals), but don’t worry about not feeling ‘worked out’ he was incredibly welcoming and very attentive to posture (which is what I need).
Real Pilates
The core pilates session was a complete mix of nationality and age (all women in my class), so I didn’t really expect to be the first to struggle… he made everything look so easy!
Although the work out is slow in pace and simple in understanding, the difference in posture, alignment and pulse made me sweat. From the spiderman – esque plank formation (which I collapsed in even though my normal planks are strong), to the squat workout that still stings now… it was a great class.
Real Pilates
I’ve realised (with the full range of aching muscles) that there’s no benefit to doing just one workout over and over, you need to change it up constantly to work all the muscles… Here’s to the next challenge 🙂

The Gentle Giants of Thailand

I’ve got a new (well old) destination on my travel list this year… i’m never usually this desperate to re-visit somewhere i’ve been to many times before. But I’ve heard that there’s some endangered beautiful creatures roaming the coasts of Thailand.
Thailand
Southern Thailand struggles with over-commercialisation and a serious problem in my eyes, using animals as tourist traps. But just a one hour drive south of Krabi, on a relatively untouched stretch of beach (yes they still exist) is the Anantara Si Kao resort.

Found on the edge of the Had Chao Mai National Park, it’s got a few enticing treks, some towering limestone cliffs, uninhabited islands and as expected… stunning coastlines. But what it’s got that makes it even more unique, is the Dugong. Also known as a manatee or sea cow, these vegetarian, gentle giants are down to their last hundred or so, with this being one of their last natural habitats in South East Asia.
dugong
Why I want to visit this resort in particular? They’ve introduced a program that not only helps rejuvenate the main food source of the dugong, but also takes you to their feeding area so you can spot these elusive mammals.

🌱 World Environment Day in Dubai 🌱

Friday the 3rd of June is World Environment Day and this year Dubai will be going blue! 🌊

By blue, I mean we’ll will be putting particular effort towards cleaning up the seafront and making the coastline a cleaner home for our various aquatic creatures. World Environment Day I’m SO glad to discover the Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG), who along with Dubai Municipality, Nakheel & the Burj Al Arab Rehab Centre, have organised a lovely little morning at the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary (located in the Ghantoot Reserve). It’s all in aid of raising awareness about our impact on the marine and coastal environment… something that is never too late to change.

EMEG’s a non-profit organization based in UAE. Established in 1996 under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the leadership of Ali Saqar Sultan Al Suweidi.

I’m particularly looking forward to helping release their rescued sea turtles! They’ve got over 40 nests this year and had a batch of 86 baby turtles hatching last week. We’ll also get involved with their beach clean-up & mangrove planting.

It’s a great initiative and I’m already looking at a few friends of mine who could do with some CSR partners 🙂

🐢 Where to Spend World Turtle Day 🐢

Did you know it’s World Turtle Day today… I’ve been lucky enough to visit the nesting sites of these magnificent creatures across the world from Oman, to Sri Lanka and the US. Watching (from afar) their incredible journey through the oceans to the beaches where they lay hundreds of eggs at a time. The sad thing is, that a VERY small percentage of them ever make it to adulthood – like under 5%! We’re not allowed to interfere with nature of course (as much as I’d love to!) but there’s some eco-friendly destinations that are helping to give them a fighting chance.

Located in the most luxurious of destinations, and a philosophy rooted in supporting the surrounding natural ecology, Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts is where we’d want to be spending time this year… and with this many hotspots all supporting World Turtle Day, I’d say we’re a tad spoilt for choice too.
World Turtle Day
Surrounded by lush, tropical flora overlooking the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, Banyan Tree Seychelles is a true Sanctuary for the Senses. Here, you can marvel at the turtles nesting on the resort’s beach. Every year from October to December, they return to lay their eggs. The resort works closely with the Marine Conservation Society of Seychelles (MCSS) to monitor turtle activity on Intendance Bay as part of the MCSS’ conservation efforts; last season they calculated at least 10,000 new hatchlings made their way into the water. The resort has recently launched a special programme, “Management of Turtle-Human Interactions and Turtle Rehabilitation”, to rehabilitate injured marine turtles before they are released back into the wild!

Nestled in the exclusive enclave of Laguna Phuket, Banyan Tree Phuket is an oasis of tranquility. The resort has supported Laguna Phuket’s sea turtle conservation programme for over 20 years, raising funds and awareness for the Phuket Marine Biological Centre, whose ongoing efforts include studies of nesting behaviour and the tracking & analysis of turtle migration via microchips and satellite tracking devices attached to the turtles. On 3rd April this year, Laguna Phuket held its 22nd annual Sea Turtle Release, with 50 turtles released into the waters of the Andaman Sea to begin their lifetime journey across the open waters. Laguna Phuket has raised funds to construct two new nursery ponds dedicated to the rehabilitation of juvenile, injured and disabled sea turtles.
World Turtle Day
Encircled by beautiful coral reef and turquoise waters, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru in the Maldives is famous for its vibrant marine life. The resort is proud to be at the forefront of protecting the Indian Ocean’s sensitive eco-system; and, under the guidance of renowned Marine Biologist, Dr. Steven Newman, is committed to the conservation of sea turtles, which nest at the resort. The Turtle Head-Start programme has been introduced to ensure turtles continue to nest and breed in the area, with a percentage of the hatchlings reared at the resort for the first year of their life before being released into the wild. To date, more than 400 turtles have graduated from the programme, giving the island’s most famous residents a higher chance of long-term survival.

Make Way for Kold Press – Dubai’s Juice Revolution

Lifting the lid on traditional juicing methods, the Kold Press Juice Kompany started it’s healthy takeover with a focus on fuelling your body with the right ingredients. With it, they’re revolutionising the way your body is able to absorb these required nutrients. I didn’t know this, but traditional juicers use a process that adds some heat and exposes the ingredients to air, two things that cut down on how many nutrients actually make their way into your bottles!

Kold Press Juice Kompany
So for some science…The Kold press method extracts the juice by pressing the fruits and vegetables without adding heat and in a more stable manor (hence the term “cold-pressed”). The pressing process ensures that a rich source of phytochemicals, including live enzymes, are maintained throughout. With this method, Kold Press is able to liberate the natural enzymes from the fibers of the fruit and vegetables, ensuring you get more nutrients per sip than with any other juice! This way of extracting the juice ensures the maximum amount of liquid from the least amount of produce and because the Kold Press does not force air into the juice during pressing, the juice won’t expire as fast either…

Kold Press Juice Kompany

Eat your fruit and drink your veggies!

Coupled with a team of nutritionists and creative chefs, the Kold Press menu has a variety of sculpted raw and unprocessed juices, that I can assure you, are made with complete integrity and love.

Kold Press Juice Kompany
Not only that, the gorgeous glass bottles they come in help ensure that their juices are also environmentally sustainable and 100% recyclable!

Grab yours at Ripe Market, Milk & Honey, Capital D Studio, Eden beach club, H.E.A.T Cafe or why not give them a call for a juice delivery!

🌾Plants – The New Gift of Romance 🌾

Most girls love getting flowers… it’s romantic, they smell nice and the give a pop of colour to your interior décor. I’m not most girls… I would MUCH rather be given plants over flowers. Sounds weird I know, but their leafy green textures are much more appealing to me than flowers whose pollen stems are bound to leak all over my desk or ruin anything I’m wearing.

For those of you in Dubai who know where to shop for these, there’s a few hotspots I’d head to first and one that I would DEFINITELY recommend for outdoor landscaping. The Dubai Garden Centre is my go-to green house normally, not just because of their delicious little café – Roseleaf, but they have plenty of little indoor plants at only 10, 15 AED each that look très cute dotted around the house. There’s a new garden centre up at Al Barari that I am dying to check out, but I’m hoping to be surprised at the prices up there.

My favourite little nursery is just behind Wasl road’s Spinneys, on a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it lawn around the corner, full of gorgeous ceramic vases and plenty of tall leafy’s for the terrace. Cheap and very cheerful, we’ve recently spent an afternoon homing bougainvillea and grasses on the patio.

I’ve trolled through Pinterest (none of the below are my images) to find those gorgeous green elements for our home, which is fittingly known as ‘the beach house’.

Here’s my favourite finds… time to get inspired by all this greenery! Going Green

Fish & Chips at their Finest 🐟🍟

There’s a handful of ‘authentic’ British dishes that I judge quite harshly out here… with fish and chips being the hardest for restaurants to get right (or so it seems). Their mushy peas are either too dry or non-existent or their batter is too oily, but i’m pleased to announce i’ll be haunting this new waterfront hotspot on a Thursday eve! Senara

Where: SENARA is a homegrown concept fusing the UAE’s staple seafood cuisine with Head Chef Anthony Reilly’s British flair. It’s the newest seafood bistro to open in Dubai, fully conceptualised in the UAE and situated perfectly on the waters edge of the Palm Jumeirah, boasting some of the best sunset views in town. Just a stones-throw from the Shoreline, Golden Mile and Frond villas. 14

What to try: Signatures include a host of fresh fish dishes daily. Its famous fish & chips is a must of course, buckets of mussels & oysters and a mouth-watering lobster linguini is amongst many more mains. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, the baked cheesecake is a worthy dish, and don’t underestimate the apple crumble or sticky date pudding… a true fusion of cultures. Senara

It’s also just about to get its alcohol license through so stay tuned!
