Ardmore: The African Art With Heart

Art is subjective, I get that, but you can’t deny the beauty in something that’s so incredibly detailed or defined. I was introduced to a very special South African design studio called Ardmore Ceramic Art through Dubai’s newest arts hub in Al Quoz… Zebra Square Gallery.

Sitting in a room of their own, beautiful vessels adorned with all the animals of Africa sit proudly waiting for a home. Each piece is 100% unique and can take weeks to hand mould, shape and paint, and you’ll find the artist’s names written on each of their handiwork. The heritage of the brand is equally as special… Christie’s has acknowledged Ardmore artworks as “modern day collectables”.

Fèe Halsted established her brand on Ardmore Farm in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains of Kwa-Zulu-Natal, South Africa. Fee then offered other local women the opportunity to become apprentices and train. The heroes in these pieces, the artists, both now men and women, all hail from this province too. The art pieces themselves are so heavily detailed, you’ll discover a new animal or detail on it every time you look. Halstead talks about adding animals as a way of hiding any cracks from her original rudimentary kiln and style of firing the clay, and now they are synonymous with the brand itself.

Ardmore is now making a name for itself internationally. Halsted once talked about a treasured silk Hermès scarf she owned. Heavily embellished with the prints of both animals and tropical plants, it was a piece that helped inspire her personal creativity. This relationship has now come full circle, thanks to a recent collaboration between Ardmore and French fashion house Hermès, it’s these South African delicate and detailed designs that now adorn the silk collectables.

Holistic Home Furniture with 24:35

24:35 Dubai is a home grown start-up furniture brand specialising in one-of-a-kind, handmade, unique statement pieces for the home and we’re in LOVE! The name derives from the Qur’an, from a passage about light, which is where the design house began… candles.

The pieces are made for both one-off purveyors and collectors, with designs hand-made using vintage timbers and unique marbles. 24:35 now boasts a collective of furniture, lighting, home accessories and olfactory home fragrances in its inventory. Currently showcasing in Concept-Me in al Quoz, Hiba Sher is the curator behind this incredible design-house.

24:35

All of their pieces are inspired by nature and they are super passionate about the environment, ensuring never ever to purchase freshly cut trees. They only purchase very high quality aged timber that they refurbish themselves or trees that have fallen due to natural calamities. Not only that, for every piece of furniture made of wood, they plant 3 new indigenous trees! 24:35

They have a wonderful ethos too, providing complimentary healthcare and education for all company dependents, as well as grants for those who wish to pursue their higher education.

Here are some of their incredible pieces… i’m tempted to redecorate already!

24:35
Assorted mulberry logs, the bark was gently removed to preserve the natural form of the pieces. Inlayed with tribal etching inspired Brazilian marble. Methodically and meticulously polished with multiple treatments to recreate the the bark of the wood.

Trays and platters adorned with semi precious stones and natural crystals. Lined and framed in pure brass, every piece is one-of-a-kind, impossible to replicate.

Want To Wake Surf In Dubai?

I’ve developed a very addictive (expensive) little surf hobby that’s been helping to keep me cool all summer. Wake surfing is Dubai’s latest water-sport to get passionate about. It’s a mixture of balance, confidence and co-ordination, but paired with a beautiful sunset and Dubai’s much cooler weather now, it really doesn’t matter how many times you fall off. Fahrenheit Beach Sports

It’s not to be confused with wake-boarding, where your feet are strapped into a board and are pulled behind the boat on a rope, it’s essentially a mini-surf board (like a skim board) that you ride on the wake of a boat, only using the rope to pull you up into standing position, very close to the back of the boat itself. Each hour is roughly between 400-550aed depending on where you go and what day of the week it is. 1 hour is great for two people, but 3-4 people all wanting a go – plan for 2!

There’s lots of people around who are keen to give it a go, as it’s a lot less dangerous than wake boarding… the boat is going a lot slower for one thing and your feet aren’t strapped to a board so when you do fall in, you can land as naturally as possible. So here’s a round up of my TOP 3 wake-surf boats about town.

1) Xtreme Wake
Setting off from just outside Spinney’s in the Marina, they have two boats available – one is better for wake surfing than the other one so be specific when you book. They specialise in more intermediate skim boards, with a brand new one available now too, that’s lighter and great for playing around on the wave with. They also have a boat that runs in Ghantoot and a gorgeous seaside taverna called La Cala that just opened up too, so you can now wine & wake (although I wouldn’t recommend that at the same time!) Extreme Wake Dubai

2) Sea Riders
Boasting two bright red boats based just opposite Bistro Des Arts at Marina Mall, Sea Riders have a great team behind them, the guys are very hands-on and beginner friendly. They came highly recommended and did not disappoint, great for group bookings too. They are also the first to foray into the famous Dubai Creek, so if you’re after a bit more of a scenic background, they’ve got you covered. Sea Riders

3) Fahrenheit Beach-sports
A brand new hotspot on the beach down by the flag, they have a great new boat, with a beautiful long wave either side and zero traffic on the water, so you’re less likely to get knocked off your game with other waves around. The boards are a little more buoyant than i’m used too, but it meant for a bit more playing around on the wave. With a cool set up down at the Dubai Marine Beach Resort & Spa, they have valet too and a bar, so get settled in for a sunset ride and a few cocktails afterwards too. Fahrenheit Beach Sports

All in all, getting in some vitamin sea with wake surfing is an awesome way to wake up and start your day, so book an early morning session wherever you choose for the best water conditions and least traffic!

The Beauty Secrets of Alpha-H Skincare

So i’m not very good normally when it comes to a regimented skincare program. I often change up my cleansers and moisturisers, brand for brand, and I will admit to having used hand soap as make-up remover in the past too 🙈. I’m definitely more of a judge-a-product-by-their-packaging/celeb spokesperson kinda gal. Normally.

This is when Alpha-H caught my eye… known for stocking only the most niche products, it was their Harvey Nichols Dubai base that I was drawn to first. A proudly Australian owned and operated brand, Alpha-H is now a globally recognised skincare line. Alpha-H at Harvey Nichols

They brand themselves as a cosmeceutical company, featuring corrective and preventative skincare, and claim to be leaders in exfoliation, resurfacing and skin renewal. Alpha-H likes to ‘bridge the gap between the beauty counter and invasive treatments’. Which suits me perfectly as my skin often needs a little pharmacology, fluctuating between a 16 year old and a 60 year old, depending on how much time i’ve spent in the sun.

Their products work on an effective delivery systems, which infuses the skin with active ingredients by adjusting the pH to stimulate action at a deeper layer of the epidermis. Their best selling product is their resurfacing treatment ‘Liquid Gold’ which has become a bit of a “cult” classic – one is sold every minute! Alpha-H at Harvey Nichols

The nicest thing about this beauty routine is that it feels like i’m putting in minimal effort and there’s absolutely zero downtime, yet it’s a proper skincare treatment.

Discovering the Chenot Palace, Azerbaijan

Only a mere 2.5 hours from Dubai lies a much colder, greener landscape in Azerbaijan. Green farmlands and foggy hillsides are prevalent, with a 25* drop in temperature from Dubai. Where both Russian and Arabic influences are clear, but there’s a real hint of Europe across it too. We set off on our 3 hour road trip to the brand new Chenot Palace wellness resort by car. The road is winding, long and yet somewhat peaceful too. Instead of the constant hooting you hear at home, it’s a controlled chaos here on the roads. Chenot Palace

After passing a Mishka (black bear) along the way, we knew we were headed out of Baku and towards Gabala where the wilderness resort was situated. It felt like Christmas almost, walking into their brand new foyer, with wooden design features everywhere and strong smells of burning log fires, knowing we were the first to experience everything this hotel has to offer. We enjoyed a few bio-lite evening snacks before heading up to bed. The schedule for the next two days promised only 1200 calories per day, with an extensive overview of the treatments the Chenot Health Wellness Resort is famous for in its native Italy.

DAY 1

Starting the morning off with a delicious spelt porridge and fruit, we headed into a barrage of nutritional, health and wellness check-ups so that we could identify areas that needed to be worked on across the two days. The first was a nutritional consult, which also provided information about our BMI, weight to muscle ratio and total body hydration, as well as giving us insight into our metabolic age. Chenot Palace

Next followed a more detailed body assessment with their diagnostics screening doctor, (nothing invasive though) with collagen tests and arterial elasticity checks, followed by a full body element check, which tells you if you’ve got too much mercury or selenium in your system for example. I really wanted to get my iron count checked (being a veggie) but the medical lab for blood tests was still under construction for the weekend. Chenot Palace

Once the more medical side of things was taken care of, I headed into a VERY interesting consultation with a Bio-Energetic doctor Mr. Ferucas. A predominantly Chinese form of energy balancing, you are asked to hold onto two golden probes whilst currents are transmitted throughout your body to find blockages. Once these blockages are found, he is then able to give you an incredibly in-depth translation. It was so interesting to listen to his account of elements in my past which had clearly shown to cause energy blockages in the meridians of my body. He then adjusted the computer to ensure that the waves going through a second time would unblock and re-energise me going forward. I almost hugged him when I left, an incredibly enlightening experience!

In order to compliment this, I was then shown straight in to the High-Tone treatment. Pads were placed on my five key pressure points and electricity flooded through me very gently, wave after wave, literally. I had on some earphones and it wasn’t long before I was fast asleep. Chenot Palace

Up next was something a little more my style… the BEST jacuzzi bath I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing! Disco lights and jets that held you still for half an hour. This was my introduction into hydro therapy.

Escorted next door in a towel, I was covered in a detoxifying mud and wrapped up like a burrito in cling film, so far so good. Then the bed I was lying on sunk into itself with me in the middle. It feels a little bit like being born… it’s snug to say the least and the layers of covers that help aid the detoxification keep things very warm in there. Once your 20 mins of sweating it all out (literally) are done, you then move across to the shower room. This part felt a bit more like a dog-grooming parlour than luxury spa, you spread ’em against a wall whilst being hosed off of all the mud from a distance. The overall feeling is actually quite nice, you have to just get your head around the prison-esque position you’re in. Chenot Palace

What i’ve realised here is that actually i’m not craving sugar. The food we’re given sustains you with enough energy to get through the day, sans hunger snacking. Must take more note of this when I get back home…

Day 2

As if a full day of diagnostics and treatment wasn’t enough, day 2 at the Chenot Palace started with an Energetic Massage. Implemented using NASA designed technology, their cupping treatment is enhanced by manual muscle stimulation along the meridians of your body. Not like other cupping treatments either… there’s no red rings or sore bruised muscles afterwards. This treatment uses a method that stimulates the area to bring out the toxins in a more natural pulsating movement, less chance of hickey-esque bruising and still as effective. Chenot Palace

Moving from the full body treatment onto a more deep cleansing facial, the cups were used again but a much smaller pair. A full facial detoxification through their uniquely combined creams and cleansers left me feeling tight-skinned and totally rejuvenated. As with most facials too, you expect to bare rather red, raw skin after a good treatment, a sign I assume of thorough cleansing, but this one left you feeling healed not hurt. Chenot Palace

The Chenot Method is found world wide in various establishments, but Azerbaijan being only its second fully owned operation. There’s rumours of a Dubai location due before the decade is out too, but I thoroughly recommend visiting the Azerbaijan hotspot, especially around January when there’s snow outside and the ski resort will be fully open.

Think of it as your New Year’s detox sorted.

4 Hotspots to Try in Dubai

I’ve been out and about, wine-ing and dining across town at some of Dubai’s newest openings and I have to say these are some that I think are worthy of a mention 😉

Fish DubaiFish Dubai

This Turkish – [not Greek as we all thought] Mediterranean hotspot just opened on the beach at the Westin/Le Meridien (you can enter through both). The food is delish, the olive oil smells like Santorini and the décor is to die for. My only gripe would be the price… it’s got a sunset view that makes it worthwhile though. It’s a true Aegean beach taverna that has a live fish grill and display, a bar you can sit at for hours and also a beach retreat to watch the sunset from with a nice cold glass of wine.

Il CapoIl Capo

It may be a tad tricky finding the hotel first time round (take Nad al Sheba exit from SZR and do a u-turn) but the new New York-Italian restaurant at the Westin, Al Habtoor City is the newest oven-baked opening that’s got my mouth watering. I’m a big pizza fan so I judge all who tell me they can whip up a worthy dough. I’d advise starting here for dinner and head to the next hotspot for cocktails!

Blind DragonBlind Dragon

All the way from Los Angeles to Dubai, at The Atrium, Al Habtoor City, this Asian themed lounge is the sister venue to the original celeb hotspot on Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. Boasting private karaoke suites (new found hobby) and lounge style dining, it’s more nightclub-esque than dinner haunt, but you won’t be starved for choice at this end of town.

Mercury LoungeMercury Lounge

Not totally new I know, but it’s relaunched its rooftop with a new menu. The views across the Dubai skyline are worth it alone! It was one of the first places this season to be open outside and It wasn’t even that hot! It’s large enough a space to feel like there’s always a new area to discover each time you visit too. A rooftop bar done well in my opinion!

Vitamin Sea with Sapia Simone

In there like swimwear… I just cannot get enough of this brand. Not only is its founder, whose long-steeped history with fashion design, Sapia Simone a lovely human being, she launched her first collection at only 23, so she’s a total inspiration to me. With vitamin sea vibes, Sapia Simone was born and her SS17 collection is now officially live.
Sapia Simone
It’s more than just swimwear though, her resort collection features some gorgeous trousers and shirts that’ll make you feel totally tropical. Her pieces can be found in over 12 stores globally, but she’s based in Dubai now. Not so far a cry from having originated the brand where else, but the original sunshine society, Miami!
Sapia Simone
With an Italian background and education at Instituto Marangoni, (where D&G and many more hail from) Italian born Sapia Simone herself knew from a young age where her passion for fashion was taking her, and one incredible adventure in Zanzibar brought the dream to life.
Sapia Simone
Making it her aim to encourage and inspire a fresh perspective on ‘beach chic’. Her mission is to make playful and beautiful swimwear silhouettes, styles and resort wear that celebrate the active and adventurous female living across the world in a variety of sunshine societies.

I’m sold.

A Seafood ‘Shellebration’ at Pier Chic!

Pier Chic is one of my favourite seafood restaurants in Dubai. It really is the epitome of fine-dining with its beautiful location out on the water at the end of the Al Qasr jetty. This (so special it should be saved for anniversaries only) hotspot is becoming more and more open and accessible too, with a whole host of delicious dining influences popping up. I jumped at the chance to check out their new six week seafood programme aptly named a ‘shellebration’ of the sea! Pier Chic

Chef Paul Lupton is the man behind this summer-curated concept, which is available from the 22nd of July –> the 4th of September. It boasts a weekly change in Pier Chic’s food focus, where you can expect to be taken on a journey through European coastal regions, enjoying all the fruit de la mar you could ever want. There’s a piece of the sea for everyone, with culinary themes such as; Marseilles Seafood Market, Valencian Seafood Paella and the Feast of St Antony, it’s a slice of (real) summertime. Pier Chic

There’s nothing I love more than a good fish & chips, so I was not going to miss sampling Pier Chic’s take on this British staple… and let me tell you – it was DELICIOUS! I may be biased because I love the venue, but honestly, that was the most chic fish & chips I’ve ever tried! Don’t let my snapchat fool you – I couldn’t put my fork down long enough to do it justice photographically. Pier Chic

Check out the schedule here:
Week 1: Marseilles Seafood Market
Week 2: Valencian Seafood Paella
Week 3: Feast of St Antony, Portugal’s Sardine Festival
Week 4: Posh Fish & Chic
Week 5: Amalfi Coast
Week 6: Galician Octopus Fiesta

BaemBu: The Dubai Based Eco-Brand

It’s said that the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is today. The Earth is in need of our help and there’s no better time to really be living authentic and organic!

Fashion is an industry that’s producing TONNES of waste, besides that you should also be conscious about where your clothes come from, who made them and what material they are being made with! (After all, you don’t really want your clothes to live longer than you do).
BaemBu

The key to being a conscious consumer is to look for that guarantee. One of my close friends started her ethical journey a couple of years ago now and is helping to persuade the region into adopting a more sustainable style. Did you know that 80% of the environmental impact of clothing occurs post-purchase, so it’s a great reminder to cool wash our clothes and hang dry!

BaemBu is her collection of unique blended T shirts and hoodies, comprising of 70% bamboo viscose & 30% organic cotton. Completely organically grown, sourced and made under fair trade regulations, Aimee Changco and her partner Matthew King ensure that even the printing on them uses organic water based ink. BaemBu

Having received accreditations that include ‘Fair Wear Foundation’, ‘Soil Association’ and ‘Confidence In Textiles’, we can be sure that BaemBu is nothing but eco-friendly. They have some amazing natural properties too, such as being; hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial, UV protection, moisture wicking as well as insulating, so you can literally take them everywhere!
BaemBu

You can get your BaemBu T’s here or spot Aimee and Matt around the UAE from Cocktail Kitchen to Market OTB, The Change Initiative and in a variety of cool pop-ups across the city. Not only do they help promote a more sustainably sourced future for Dubai’s fashion landscape, they also run the ‘Shoebox Love’ campaign during Ramadan so make sure you follow them for more ethical initiatives coming up!
